Burke and Divide Counties have collaborated to prepare a two-county Multi-Hazard Mitigation Plan (MHMP). A MHMP provides the counties with a tool to identify, prepare for and plan for potential hazards. With assistance from KLJ, a multi-disciplinary planning and engineering firm, the counties were successful in obtaining hazard mitigation grant funds from the North Dakota Department of Emergency Services to support this important planning project. The primary objectives of the effort are to assess and reduce
risks associated with hazard events. Risk Assessment – The process of measuring the potential loss of life, personal injury, economic loss and property damage resulting from natural hazards by assessing the community’s vulnerability to natural or man-made hazards. Risk Reduction – The process of identifying actions and mitigation projects to reduce the impacts of hazards on the community.
